I have a friend who bought me a scratchie (among other things) for my 21st birthday. I could hardly believe my luck when I scratched the panel and it revealed I had won $25,000. Best 21st ever, I screamed in excited disbelief, completely disregarding that old adage that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Perhaps in a more sober state, I would have been able to read the part where it said any winnings would be validated by the Tooth Fairy, and thereby realised a vital clue- the scratchie was a big, fat fake.
A few years later, this same friend bought me another scratchie, but this time, it was a poster of the world where you scratch off all the countries you have visited. Much more fun- until I realised that, despite all my travels, there was a whole lotta world that I haven’t seen. And given that most of the countries I’ve visited were smaller than my fingernail on the map, it pretty much looked like I hadn’t scratched anything.
The moral of the story is- scratchies lead to disappointment. Unless you really do win $25,000 and use it to visit lots of countries. A girl can dream, right?
In the meantime, here is a list of the countries I have been lucky enough to visit over the last twelve years. Click on a country to view a list of posts that relate to it.
